Jimmy Webb Premieres Piano & Orchestra Works

Jimmy Webb, the only songwriter with hits in pop, country, disco and rap, now adds a classical nocturne to his catalog. Orchestra Kentucky (Jeff Reed, Music Director), pianist Jeffrey Biegel, and G. Schirmer, Inc. (part of the Music Sales Corporation) announce the world premiere of Jimmy Webb's Nocturne for Piano and Orchestra (Nocturne for "Lefty") on Monday, October 24th at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Known for legendary hits including 'Wichita Lineman,' and 'MacArthur Park,' the Grammy-award winning songwriter and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame teamed up with pianist Jeffrey Biegel and Orchestra Kentucky for this unique project, funded by donor Dr. Robert G. Schiff. Following the premiere, Webb will join Orchestra Kentucky to perform his hits, including 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix,' 'Up, Up and Away,' and others. On October 25th, Orchestra Kentucky will award Webb with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Nocturne for Piano and Orchestra (Nocturne for "Lefty"), composed by Webb (for pianist Jeffrey Biegel), was orchestrated by Webb together with Grammy-winner Jeff Tyzik. Webb dedicated the work to his wife and partner Laura Savini. About the composition, Webb said: 'This music originated in discussions I had with my wife about famous nocturnes such as "Moonlight Sonata" and others. The piece depicts different aspects of nightfall; the mathematical exactitude of life in the city, the splendor of night skies and full moons partially obscured by cloud, the gentle rise and fall of human conversation in social gatherings and the dizzying whirl of waltzing on a seaside esplanade. It is essentially an opportunity for the listener to contemplate their own experiences during the hours of darkness. It includes a personal tribute to the music of Miles Davis, and the smoky dives and small clubs where I performed in my early years: the kingdom of the lonely and disillusioned. "Lefty" is my wife, Laura Savini, of PBS fame, a raving beauty who is also a Southpaw. The notes have been inspired by her joy and devotion to art.' Orchestrator Jeffrey Tyzik noted: 'It was a great pleasure to collaborate with Jimmy Webb on his new multi-faceted composition Nocturne for Piano and Orchestra (Nocturne for "Lefty"). I have been a great admirer of Jimmy's huge body of work since the 1960s and I was honored to be a part of orchestrating his beautiful music for symphony orchestra. Jimmy writes from the heart and continues to be an inspiration for all songwriters.' Pianist and Collaborator Jeffrey Biegel added: 'The sonic landscape of Jimmy's piece is instantly ear-catching and beautifully laid out for the piano. One reason I approached Jimmy is because he is a songwriter and his sense of melody and harmony suit the genre for piano and orchestra. He treats the piano in a unique style which immediately grabbed my attention the moment I received the piano part.' Webb's compositions have always been highly influenced by classical music and structure. He is a student of classical music and was deeply inspired by the opportunity to create this piece. Jacob Groth Presents Benefit Concert For Friends of Griffith Park

Music Sales Corporation is excited to announce with their EMMY-award winning composer Jacob Groth, Nordic Noir LA: A Benefit Concert for Friends of Griffith Park. The concert will be held on Sunday, September 25th at Griffith Park’s legendary Greek Theatre. The celebrated Danish composer known for his work in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and the CBS TV series Unforgettable, presents with the Danish Film Harmonics Orchestra, a musical evening to showcase the Friends of Griffith Park’s goals of conserving the environment and urban wildlife surrounding Los Angeles. The event also aims to illustrate Nordic culture through exceptional sound. The concert will premiere never-before-heard renditions of Groth’s compelling scores including The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Dead Man Down and more through an audiovisual experience. Guests will additionally enjoy local artist pop-up shops, live DJ sets and performances by the Holman United Methodist Choir. Fallulah Performs on Toppen Af Poppen

Congratulations to Fallulah, who kicked off the newest season of Toppen Af Poppen with an incredible interpretation of Ida Corr’s “I Found Her.” Serving as the first performance within Episode 1, the original Danish dance track was transformed into a touching ballad. The sparse piano accompaniment showed off Fallulah’s vocal range and her raw ability to resonate with listeners. The piece quickly turned into a favorite for both the Toppen Af Poppen team and episode viewers alike. Toppen Af Poppen (Top of the Pops) is a popular show in Denmark in compilation with The Best Singers series. The anticipated fall season just premiered this last Sunday on TV2. Jóhann Jóhannsson To Score Blade Runner Sequel

A lot to look forward to from Jóhann Jóhannsson! It has been announced the Icelandic composer is scoring the Blade Runner sequel, set to release October 6th, 2017. Although minimal information about the sequel has been provided, the casting has been confirmed which stars Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling and Jared Leto. Jóhann and director Denis Villeneuve have become quite the team over the years. They’ve partnered up for films Prisoners (2013), the Oscar-nominated Sicario (2015) and additionally the upcoming sci-fi thriller Arrival, which premieres November 2016. When asked about succeeding Vangelis’s original 1982 Blade Runner score, Jóhann explained to FACT: “Vangelis is a composer that has been a huge influence on my own work, and not only the Blade Runner score – many of his solo albums have been a rich part of my life for a long time. What I love about his work, which I think is also present in my own work, is his sense of space – the way he uses space, the way he uses silences and this sense of monumentalism in a way.” Jóhann’s full length interview with FACT will debut next week.

Johann Johannsson Scores Paramount Pictures Film 'Arrival'

Paramount Pictures just released the teaser for their upcoming sci-fi drama, Arrival and there is certainly a lot to anticipate. The one minute video illustrates an alien invasion on earth, but alludes to a more thought-provoking, suspenseful portrayal than your average sci-fi movie. Starring as an expert linguist, Amy Adams carefully delivers the first line. “There are days that define your story beyond your life. Like the day they arrived.” The scenes continue – overcast skies matching an unsettling commentary. Music Sales Group is excited to announce it has acquired the U.S. publishing rights to “The Twist,” written by Hank Ballard and recorded by Chubby Checker. Billboard declared “The Twist” as “the biggest chart hit of all time” in 2008. It is the only song in history to have held the No. #1 spot in two separate release cycles - first in September 1960 and then in January 1962. By popularizing a rendition of Hank Ballard’s original on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, Chubby Checker’s recording of “The Twist” truly revolutionized American pop culture and dance in 1960.
