Newest Signing Heather Christian Performs at Exclusive Music Sales Corp. Reception

Schirmer Theatrical and Music Sales Creative were thrilled to host an exclusive performance this past Monday for their latest signing – the Obie Award-winning composer Heather Christian. The showcase was held in the Music Sales Corp. New York office, where guests enjoyed drinks and hors d’oeuvres while the Sundance Fellow performed a variety of her theatre and contemporary avant-folk works – including unreleased songs from her forthcoming albums House/Hymn II and Animal Wisdom. Christian captivated the intimate audience, as she flexed her powerhouse vocals and let her Mississippi roots shine. Her set list included “Willie and the Owls” (The World Is Round, 2014 Obie, Special Citation), “Talk to me Vegas” (Mission Drift: Drama League Outstanding Performance Nominee) “Agnus Dei” (Animal Wisdom) and “Phoenix” (House/Hymn II). She was accompanied by backing vocalists Amber Gray (Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812) and Kristen Sieh (Orange Is the New Black, Boardwalk Empire). As an added bonus, select film scores by Christian played overhead to welcome guests before her performance – including snippets from Lemon, Pauline Alone and Woman in Deep. President Robert Thompson warmly welcomed Christian to the Music Sales Corp. / Schirmer Theatrical team and made note of her recent accomplishments – including that the 2017 Sundance favorite she scored, Lemon, was recently picked up by Magnolia Pictures. St. Vincent, John Legend and Zach Galifianakis Cover Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You” In Comedic Short

An incredibly diverse and notable lineup of artists have come together to show their support during this tumultuous political climate the best way they know how – releasing a charity album to protect reproductive healthcare. Titled Seven Inches for Planned Parenthood, the box set release of 7” singles will include mostly unreleased music from an array of artists including Björk, the Foo Fighters, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and Sharon Van Etten. The collective effort will also feature comedians, writers, activists and visual artists – most notably Sarah Silverman, Tig Notaro, Margaret Atwood and Shepard Fairey. In light of the forthcoming album, the initiative just released the first of many videos – a comedic short in which Annie Clark (St. Vincent), John Legend and Zach Galifianakis “attempt” to rehearse Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You.” To stay up-to-date on Seven Inches, visit their Facebook page. Tom Adams Previews Upcoming Album With "Come On, Dreamer"

Known for his ambient works and his fluttering falsetto, the acclaimed songwriter-composer Tom Adams is about to debut his first full-length album Silence on May 5th via Kowloon Records. The eight-track record is said to be full of minimal arrangements, stunning piano works and was recorded entirely live in a single afternoon. NPR’s All Songs Considered announced the exciting news in February by sharing one featured track titled “Sparks,” which they reviewed as a hypnotic piece of perfection. Since then, the Berlin-based composer has premiered the Leo Plunkett-directed music video for “Come On, Dreamer.” The intimate, uplifting song brings forth messages of self-acceptance and embracing vulnerability in its rawest form. Hauschka’s 'What If' Impresses Critics and Listeners Alike

Hauschka is having quite the year. Not only was his collaborative score with Dustin O'Halloran (Lion) nominated for both the Academy and Golden Globe Awards, but additionally the German composer released his eighth studio album What If this March 31st, which explores themes of a dystopian world conceptualized through prepared piano and electronics. By fusing old and new technologies, Hauschka was able to achieve a deeper experimental sound and provide an engaging, rhythmic soundscape for listeners. NPR credits both his 1970s Roland Jupiter 4 analog synthesizer and a Disklavier (Yamaha's electronic mechanical piano) in creating his "most claustrophobic album and his most far-reaching." With song titles including "I Can't Find Water" and "Familiar Things Disappear," Hauschka further encourages listeners to ponder the future of our existence and to provide a sense of urgency. Bertelmann further explained to Noisey (VICE): "I just wanted to throw out these questions that are appearing naturally when you think about how the world and humans are developing. There are problems with ecology and the climate, but nobody feels like they're urgent." Since its release, What If has scored an Album of the Day spot on Bandcamp, among other excellent reviews. Rolling Stone Reviews Jóhann Jóhannsson As Massive Highlight at Big Ears Festival

“A listening experience unlike any other in America,” is how Rolling Stone describes the contemporary classical Big Ears Festival. Based in Knoxville, Big Ears is known for its slower pace in between sets, having no headliners and featuring eclectic acts from Wilco to Sarah Kirkland Snider – all so one can curate their own festival experience. Although the vibe is certainly more casual than other music festivals, ears are definitely perked. According to Since I Left You, Rachel Grimes states Big Ears “is an ideal place to share a new project because there is such an adventurous quality to the programming, and audiences are excited and open to anything.” The acts were indeed receptive to the exploratory nature set forth by both the festival and audience members. Although most of the performers could be placed in the classical genre, there were radical interjections from both the music and the performance choices that would feel more in-place at a rock concert. Rolling Stone mentions this and also cites Jóhann Jóhannsson as the forefront of this phenomenon with his Drone Mass performance. Rolling Stone elaborates: “Played to a standing crowd in rock club Mill & Mine, the piece (Drone Mass) made it difficult not to adhere to the unwritten, long-held orchestra rule of not applauding until the end. But after a movement where a vocal drone met a cello slide – the satisfying sound of a properly tuned guitar, an effect like a film coming into focus – the boundary was breached and torrents of applause followed.” Since I Left You also reviews Jóhannsson’s performance: “The stopping and starting of the voices and strings–the interplay between the two–was astounding, both lush and loud.” Missed Big Ears Festival? Titled “Video Star,” the groovy anthem is driven by lots of hand claps, sunny guitar riffs and an overall retro-soul dominance, with Colby’s warm vocals carrying the momentum. “Let it roll, I want to know, that you can see me. Let me be your video star,” Colby sings with a smoothness that could easily persuade. Sharon Van Etten Covers "The End of the World"

Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) and Sam Cohen have taken the Amazon series Man in the High Castle to the next level with their anticipated concept album, Resistance Radio. The 18-track compilation features artists from today, providing their own innovative takes on early 1960s hits. The eclectic mix includes Sharon Van Etten, Beck, Norah Jones and Karen O among others. As the first release, the Skeeter Davis classic “The End of the World" is covered beautifully by Sharon Van Etten. A true indicator of what is to come from the project, the track tends to steer in a darker direction and naturally matches the alt-history themes within the series. “When I heard that vocal of hers on that track is when I knew the potential of this,” Burton reflected to NPR. “She could have been a big vocalist in the '60s easily. The LA Opera recording of John Corigliano's opera The Ghosts of Versailles won twice at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards: Best Opera Recording and Best Engineered Album, Classical. This world premiere audio recording is the LA Opera's acclaimed 2015 production, recorded live and conducted by James Conlon. It features soprano Patricia Racette as Marie Antoinette, baritone Christopher Maltman as Beaumarchais, baritone Lucas Meachem as Figaro, and Patti LuPone as Samira. Darko Tresnjak directed the production. Mark Donahue, Fred Vogler, and David L Williams engineered the recording. The two-CD album and digital download are on the Pentatone label's new American Operas series. The Metropolitan Opera commissioned The Ghosts of Versailles to celebrate its 100th anniversary and debuted it in 1991 to ecstatic reviews and a sold-out run. This grand opera buffa, with a libretto by William M. Hoffman, has continued to win over audiences and critics alike with many performances and new productions for a quarter-century. Harts Signs to Washington Square / Razor & Tie

The rising Melbourne singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Harts has signed to Washington Square Music, an imprint of Razor & Tie. Fusing pop, funk and psychedelic rock seamlessly through his eclectic musicianship and production work, Harts has mesmerized fans, critics and even the late Prince who proclaimed, “he reminds me of myself at that age.” Harts has charmed audiences from Pinkpop Festival to SXSW 2016 with his Hendrix-influenced guitar style, dance-oriented tracks and impressive showmanship. Max Richter Releases "Three Worlds: Music from Woolf Works"

Max Richter’s Three Worlds: Music from Woolf Works has just been released today via Deutsche Grammophon, a concept album inspired by and in tribute to, the acclaimed English author Virginia Woolf. The anticipated record reflects Richter’s recent score for the award-winning Wayne McGregor’s ballet triptych Woolf Works. Pairing with the performance, the album is also divided into three separate sections, each representing a different novel from Woolf (Mrs Dalloway, Orlando & The Waves). The textured work covers an array of musical styles, ranging from orchestral to electronic and additionally features interludes from Woolf herself, which are the only recordings of her voice known to survive. After receiving rave reviews from its original premiere in 2015, Woolf Works (featuring The Royal Ballet) is currently having its revival this January 21 – February 14th 2017, with a worldwide broadcast set for February 8th. Oscars 2017 - Hauschka and Dustin O’Halloran Nominated for Best Original Score (Lion)

The 2017 Oscar nominations are in! Hauschka and Dustin O’Halloran are among those nominated for Best Original Score, for their collaborative work within the film Lion. According to Forbes, there are five first-time nominees within the category, a rare event for the Academy – which includes both Lion composers. O’Halloran and Hauschka expressed gratitude for the nomination in a shared statement. "We feel extremely honored to receive this Academy Awards nomination and to be acknowledged by The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences. We celebrate this nomination with our friend and colleague director Garth Davis, and the whole creative team and talented cast of Lion. We are grateful that our music supports this magnificent true story of love, determination and family. Saroo’s journey enriched our lives and we hope it will touch audiences watching this beautiful movie around the world, bringing us all closer together." Hauschka Announces Eighth Studio Album "What If"

Fresh from his Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for scoring Lion with Dustin O’Halloran, Hauschka has just announced his forthcoming eighth studio album What If. The nine-track record will be released March 31st via City Slang and Temporary Residence Ltd. Hauschka expresses on Facebook, “I’ve dived further into noise and experimentation with electronics on this record, I feel it may be my most radical to date.” The experimental instrumentation unquestionably seems comparable with the album’s previewed subject matter.
