The Music Sales Group Announces the Sale of its Printed Music and Retail Divisions to Hal Leonard LLC

Global independent music publisher The Music Sales Group has today announced the sale of its physical and online printed music and Musicroom-branded retail businesses to Milwaukee-based worldwide music print publisher Hal Leonard LLC. In addition, The Music Sales Group and Hal Leonard will continue to work together in the future by entering into a global licensing agreement to represent and exploit Music Sales’ copyrights in print. Commenting on the deal, Music Sales’ Chairman and Owner Robert Wise, said: “Printed music has played a special role in the long history of Music Sales, but our direction of travel has been very clear in recent years as we continue the expansion of our portfolio of copyrights in all styles and genres across the world. Zeal & Ardor Shares "Gravedigger's Chant" As Preview To Forthcoming Album

Today we’re so excited to announce that Manuel Gagneux (Zeal & Ardor) has released “Gravedigger’s Chant,” the first single off of his forthcoming album Stranger Fruit. Initially making his mark in 2017 with Devil is Fine, the Swiss-American frontman has stayed true to his signature gritty vocals, and unique blend of delta blues and metal on this haunting new track. “The gravedigger’s chant is the song sung by the people who lay your body to rest,” Manuel explains. “These people don’t care where you were, but they know what you did and who loved you. All they know is what lies before them. So they sing this song, since you can no longer breathe a note.” Manuel elaborates on the accompanying music video. “Our intent is both to familiarize as well as alienate. The video for Gravedigger’s Chant subverts roles: People find themselves in situations untypical for their ilk, tools become weapons, weapons turn into tools, and fingers meant for sensing make themselves felt.” Stranger Fruit is set to release on June 8th on CD, cassette, vinyl, and digital download / stream. The music of Australia's finest traditional didgeridoo player – William Barton – opens Tourism Australia's new advertising campaign featuring Australian talent Margot Robbie, Chris Hemsworth, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Paul Hogan, and has become one of the most talked about advertisements of all time.The spot – which strategically launched under the teasing guise of a trailer for the faux film "Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home" – features William Barton’s work 'Birdsong At Dusk' (the title track from his 2014 ABC Classics album and published by G. Schirmer) in the opening shot as it pans to Mick Dundee’s long lost American son standing atop the Australian ranges. Listen to the track here. G. Schirmer, Inc. Acquires Worldwide Publishing Rights to Julius Eastman Catalog

G. Schirmer, Inc., part of The Music Sales Group, announces it has acquired the worldwide publishing rights to composer Julius Eastman’s catalog, including iconic works such as Femenine (1974), Stay on it (1973), and the controversial Ni**er Series (1978-1979). The New York Times broke the news earlier today.Eastman has been praised for his fearlessness and originality as a composer, performer and pianist, mostly active in the 1970s and 1980s. An unabashed pride in his race and sexuality defines his artistry, along with his pioneering synthesis of minimalism and improvisation. "What I am trying to achieve is to be what I am to the fullest," Eastman said in 1976. "Black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, a homosexual to the fullest." Blurring the boundaries between joy and austerity, his legendary compositions and performances were an extension of the life he led. Eastman tragically fell from the public eye during the final years of his life, plagued by mental illness, drug addiction and homelessness. He died on May 28th, 1990, in Buffalo, NY, and it would be nine months before a proper obituary was published in The Village Voice.Portions of his scattered, forgotten catalog have since been collected by composer Mary Jane Leach, whose archival work precipitated the essential album Unjust Malaise (New World Records, 2005) and book Gay Guerrilla: Julius Eastman and His Music (2015). These led to a growing awareness of and respect for Eastman and his music."Minimalist Composer Julius Eastman, Dead for 26 Years, Crashes the Canon," wrote The New York Times in 2016. An outpouring of festivals, performances, commercial releases, and publicity continue to intensify Eastman’s fame and celebrate his singular genius: this past month in New York City, The Kitchen presented Julius Eastman: That Which is Fundamental. Other recent Eastman celebrations include those of the London Contemporary Music Festival, Monday Evening Concerts in Los Angeles, and Bowerbird in Philadelphia. Audiences and critics alike are quick to celebrate Eastman’s resurgent body of work, which The New Yorker recently described as "wild, grand, delirious, demonic…an uncontainable personality surging into sound.""Julius’ music profoundly affected both composition and performance since he first came on the scene in the mid-20th century," writes Gerry Eastman, brother of Julius, and accomplished saxophonist. 'Forever Changes' Receives 50th Anniversary Box Set

Here’s some ‘Love’ for your Valentine’s Day! The iconic 1967 album Forever Changes is receiving a 50th anniversary box set. Releasing this April via Rhino, the collection will feature a 4-disc reissue (including alternative and mono mixes), original co-producer and engineer Bruce Botnik’s stereo remaster of the LP, as well as a DVD with a 24/96 stereo mix – all within a 12 x 12 hardbound book. The anniversary collection includes the tracks “Alone Again Or,” “Old Man,” and “Wooly Bully,” which are all part of the Music Sales catalog. Fusing psych-rock with folk and baroque pop, Forever Changes is often cited as one of the most pivotal releases during the ‘Summer of Love’ era. It was added to the National Recording Registry, inducted into the 2008 Grammy Hall of Fame, and is ranked #40 on Rolling Stone’s ‘Top 500 Albums of All Time’ list. “The Champ” and “Get Up, Stand Up” Are Sampled in Migos’ ‘Culture II’

Two songs from the Music Sales catalog have been incorporated within Migos’ Culture II, which debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. The release is the most streamed album for any week since April 2017. “The Champ,” written by Harry Palmer, is sampled within the album’s lead single “Stir Fry,” and “Get Up, Stand Up,” written by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, is incorporated within the track “Crown The Kings.” “Stir Fry,” in particular, has been selected as the official song of 2018 NBA All-Star Weekend, which will take place February 16th-18th in Los Angeles. The in-demand track also has been featured in Apple’s iPhone X – Animoji commercial, below, which aired during the Grammys as a nod to Migos’ multiple nominations. Node Records to Release the Official Motion Picture Soundtrack for 'Lemon'

Node Records, a division of the Music Sales Group, is excited to announce the release of the official motion picture soundtrack from Janicza Bravo's film Lemon, featuring original orchestrations by the Obie Award-winning composer and Music Sales artist Heather Christian.Named a Sundance-favorite by Vogue, the comedy-drama film was acquired by Magnolia Pictures and released in theaters August 18th, 2017. Heather Christian's 'Animal Wisdom' Praised By The New York Times and Vogue

The Obie Award-winning composer and Music Sales artist Heather Christian recently premiered 'Animal Wisdom,' her own folk-blues requiem show at The Bushwick Starr to great acclaim. Co-produced by The Bushwick Starr and West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Mark Rosenblatt-directed show stars Heather herself, who shares conversations between her and her deceased, larger-than-life relatives through spoken word and song. Her musical quartet amplifies her stories, smoothly swaying from gospel and folk-blues, as the show eventually escalates to a 20 minute black-out, full requiem mass with a choir. Minnie Riperton’s ‘Perfect Angel: Deluxe Edition' Available Now

In celebration of Minnie Riperton’s 70th birthday, Universal Music Enterprises has released a deluxe edition of Perfect Angel, in standard digital and 96k/24-bit high resolution audio formats on December 1st. Showcasing Riperton’s timeless spirit and signature high-upper vocal range, the remastered collection features eleven bonus tracks - including an alternative version of “Lovin’ You” backed by the Wonderlove band, a duet version of “Take A Little Trip” with Stevie Wonder, and an acoustic version of “Seeing You This Way.” This release brings to light Stevie Wonder’s true involvement in Perfect Angel, as he co-produced the original release (along with Minnie’s husband Richard Rudolph), arranged tracks, played keyboard, harmonica and drums, in addition to writing two songs - all under the pseudonym ‘El Toro Negro.’ Stevie Wonder shares his sentiments with UMe. “Minnie was my dear friend. "I first saw Jack Carty live in Canada (of all places) almost seven years ago”, says Heath, “and have been watching him develop as a songwriter and a performer ever since. Terry Riley Scores François Girard’s Most Ambitious Film to Date - Hochelaga, Terre des Âmes

Featuring an original score by minimalist composer Terry Riley, iconic filmmaker François Girard’s latest film Hochelaga, Terre des Âmes was met with great acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival. Variety praised the ‘diverse, beautiful score,’ by Riley, which also features his son, the composer / guitarist Gyan Riley, and longtime Riley champions Kronos Quartet. Music Sales Creative and G.Schirmer/AMP provided music supervision services for the film. This marks Terry Riley’s first major film score, which has plans to be released later this year on Node Records. A stylistic departure from the composer’s signature layering of rhythmic cells and spiritual melodies, the Hochelaga score draws heavily on Riley’s study of Indian Raga with a strong emphasis on timbre and moodiness.Hochelaga, Terre des Âmes is described by TIFF as "a grand fresco on the rich history of Montreal that spans 750 years," and Girard's most ambitious project to date.
